At the stroke of midnight, the Indian women’s cricket entered a new era. Harmanpreet Kaur and her side did the unthinkable and unprecedented, winning the maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. Beating a challenging South Africa side by 52, the win sent the entirety of India into jubilation. The jam-packed DY Patil Stadium roared like never before and among the crowd were some huge names, witnessing the iconic moment.
Rohit Sharma gets teary-eyed after final
The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, ICC chairman Jay Shah, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, BCCI president Mithus Manhas, and Nita Ambani with her son Akash Ambani were all present and applauded the Women in Blue. In what was an enthralling final, all the renowned names stood up and applauded the tremendous effort put up by the players.
However, one moment caught everyone’s eye. As Harmanpreet Kaur caught Nadine de Klerk to finish the match, a certain Rohit Sharma’s heart filled with pride and emotion. The former Indian men’s captain was teary-eyed. While the camera quickly moved away from him, two seconds were enough to catch the glimpse of how satisfied Rohit was. You can watch his reaction below.
Rohit Sharma was among the special invitees for the India vs South Africa final in a stadium where the Hitman grew up dominating. The local lad witnessed the entire match alongside his family and was continuously seen cheering for the Women in Blue. After the women’s team finally ended the four-decade-long wait, Rohit couldn’t stop clapping, and it looked as if he fought back his tears. After all, he himself knows a thing or two about winning a World Cup.
ODI World Cup remains a dream for Rohit
Rohit Sharma is considered as one of the most accomplished captains of India, having led the Men in blue to a T20 World Cup 2024 win followed by an ICC Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year. He was also part of the ICC Champions Trophy win in 2013 as a player, and has won multiple Asia Cups too. However, he was ever-so close of lifting the ODI World Cup as well but his side fell short in the summit clash against Australia in 2023.
The moment left Rohit and the entirety of India heartbroken. Rohit’s team looked invincible in that tournament but a certain Travis Head showed up and the rest is history. Now, retired from Tests and T20Is, Rohit’s only dream is to lift an ODI World Cup. For that, he needs to keep himself amongst runs till 2027. He recently won the Player of the Series award in the 3-ODI-match rubber against the Aussies, giving his fans a major boost of confidence.
