Wanindu Hasaranga or Lasith Malinga – who completed 100 ODI wickets for Sri Lanka in least matches?

Wanindu Hasaranga recently completed 100 ODI wickets for Sri Lanka in his side's win over Bangladesh in Colombo.

Sri Lanka’s spin ace Wanindu Hasaranga has achieved a significant milestone in his ODI career, becoming the second-fastest Sri Lankan to reach 100 wickets in men’s One-Day Internationals. Hasaranga accomplished the feat in just 64 matches, surpassing pace legend Lasith Malinga’s mark of 68 matches.

Hasaranga reached the landmark during Sri Lanka’s 77-run victory over Bangladesh on July 1, where he returned with magical figures of 4 for 10 in 7.5 overs. His 100th ODI wicket was Litton Das, trapped lbw for a duck.

Wanindu Hasaranga: Sri Lanka’s X-factor since Malinga

Hasaranga has been a consistent performer for Sri Lanka since his debut in 2017. His variations, accuracy, and ability to break partnerships have made him a go-to bowler in the middle overs. After 64 ODIs, Hasaranga has 103 wickets at an average of 24.31 and an economy of 5.09. In contrast, Malinga had 90 wickets in his first 64 matches, reaching the 100-wicket mark in his 68th game.

While Hasaranga’s numbers reflect a more all-around control over wickets and economy, Malinga’s raw pace and yorkers brought a different dimension. Malinga’s 100th ODI wicket came against New Zealand in 2010, when he dismissed Martin Guptill for a golden duck in Dambulla. Ajantha Mendis remains the fastest Sri Lankan to 100 ODI wickets (63 matches).
