Virat Kohli should play Ranji Trophy, but can BCCI ensure the safety of the superstars?

Virat Kohli last played in a Ranji Trophy match in 2012, when Delhi played UP. The former lost by six wickets.

Virat Kohli has been named in the provisional squad for Delhi’s upcoming Ranji Trophy fixtures, but there is no certainty if the star batter will eventually turn up for the clash or not. As per a report, Virat sustained a neck injury during the IND vs AUS Sydney Test, and might just need some rest. Yes, on current form, and the fact he hasn’t played in the premier tournament for the last 13 years, he must play. But then, can the BCCI ensure his safety; or for other big stars like Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant.

Virat Kohli Uncertain to Play Ranji Trophy

The latter is confirmed to play in Delhi’s next fixture, and Rohit is expected to turn up for Mumbai, but who takes care of the safety of these players, who are followed in millions in India? Plus, Ranji Trophy has had a history, where there have been multiple incidents, that can risk the their safety.

Back in 2017, during Delhi’s match vs UP, a car entered the playing area, in a match at the Air Force Complex in Palam, where Pant and Ishant Sharma were playing. There were Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina too. Fortunately, there was no harm done. Then there was also a Ranji clash in Ongole, in 2020, where cows invaded the pitch during Saurashtra and Andhra clash.

What About Security of Players?

In 2019, in Vijaywada, during the Andhra vs Vidarbha clash, there was a snake that entered the ground where the safety could have been compromised. In 2020, in a match between Mizoram and Chandigarh, the match was stopped as vehicles drove past the sight screen.

Under these circumstances, where generally there is no crowd, and hence reduced security, how will players like Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma manage? There is no doubt that the BCCI will instruct the state associations to tighten the security, but what can be said about crazy fans in the country?

There have been many incidents in the past, where for players like Virat and even MS Dhoni, fans run over the fence, into the playing area, just to touch their feet. But then, in the process the players could get injured, or might just lose their concentration. So, the onus is on the board, and the other stakeholders to take care of the national treasures.
