“Virat Kohli best red-ball captain”: Ex-India spinner hails King’s “Viv Richards” like attitude

Former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan heaped praise on Virat Kohli's attacking mindset on the field and labeled him as the best Test skipper

Former India cricket team spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan opined that Virat Kohli was the best red-ball captain ahead of IND vs AUS Test series. The Tamil Nadu cricketer heaped praise on the batting maestro’s attitude on the field and drew a parallel between him and the legendary Sir Vivian Richards. After having a poor run at home in Tests, Virat Kohli is now bracing himself for the Australian challenge in Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

‘Virat Kohli best red ball captain’

Speaking on Cricket Petta podcast, Sivaramakrishnan hailed Virat Kohli’s attacking mindset on the field. He explained that it was essential for a player to display emotions on the field instead of being a “machine” on the ground. He added that a player should have the attitude of Sir Viv Richards who could intimidate bowlers with his very eyes. Further, he named Virat Kohli as the best red-ball captain while picking MS Dhoni for white-ball.

Virat Kohli’s attacking attitude and MS Dhoni’s calm demeanour. For me, the red ball best captain is Virat and the white ball is Dhoni,” said Sivaramakrishnan

Make or break series for Virat Kohli

The upcoming IND vs AUS series will be make or break for Virat Kohli, who has been in poor red-ball form for a few years now. He was pathetic in the IND vs NZ series, where spinners got the better of him, and averaged 13 against them. In his last 14 matches, he has only two hundreds and three fifty scores, since Feb 2022.

For the record, in the last 34 Tests Virat Kohli has only scored 1838 runs at an average of 31.68. If he doesn’t perform in this series, it could well be his last in Tests, since the BCCI has already decided to take a call on his Test future. The IND vs AUS Test series will get underway from November 22 with Perth all set to host the 1st Test.
