Vijay Hazare Trophy: Karnataka outlasts Pandya’s Baroda in last-over drama to reach semis

Karnatak goes into the semifinals of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 after winning against Baroda in the final over.

The fourth quarter-final match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 Karnataka wins the encounter with the final over defence against Krunal Pandya’s Baroda at Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara. Batting first, Karnataka posted a score of 281/8, which Krunal’s men failed to chase, the match went to the final over where Karnataka successfully defended the target, with Baroda getting bundled up at 276 runs. With this win, Karnataka sealed the semifinal birth. They will take on the winner of Gujarat vs Haryana.

Devdutt Padikkal’s century and Abhilash Shetty’s all-round contribution stood out for Karnataka. Prasidh Krishna took crucial wickets in between too. For Baroda, Shashwat Rawat shone with a brilliant century, while Raj Limbani excelled as an all-rounder.

Devdutt Padikkal shine for Karnataka

Karnataka’s innings began with their captain, Mayank Agarwal, being dismissed early, scoring only one run. However, coming fresh from Australia, Devdutt Padikkal set the tone with his solid knock of 102 from 99 balls. He was well supported by Aneesh KV, who scored a quickfire 52 off 64 balls. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Karnataka managed to post 281/8 in their 50 overs the board. Thanks to the crucial lower-order hitting by Abhilash Shetty, who remained not out on 43.

Raj Limbani was the pick of the bowlers for Baroda, claiming three important wickets, while Atit Sheth chipped in with two.

Baroda’s tough chase in batting collapse

Chasing a target of 282, Baroda’s innings started on a careful note. Despite an early setback, with Ninad Ashvinkumar Rathva departing for 14, Shashwat Rawat took charge, playing a magnificent innings of 104 runs off just 126 balls. He was well supported by Atit Sheth, who scored a brisk 56, adding crucial runs to the scoreboard. However, Karnataka bowlers kept their cool and picked up wickets at regular intervals.

With the game swinging like a pendulum, Baroda found themselves needing 12 runs off the last over. Abhilash Shetty stepped in to save the team, giving away only 7 runs in the final over. Baroda was eventually bowled out for 276, falling just 5 runs short of the target. It was a collective effort from Karnataka bowlers, with Shreyas Gopal and Vasuki Koushik taking two wickets each, while Prasidh Krishna and Abhilash Shetty claimed two each.
