The 2026 Asian Games men's cricket tournaments will take place from September 17 to October 3 in Japan.

With just one game remaining in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the focus will move to the Indian cricket team. The Men in Blue have a jam-packed international schedule this year. One of the most exciting projects will be the Asian Games. However, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav could miss out on the 2026 Asian Games after the BCCI reportedly left him out of a 30-member list of probables for the continental event.

According to a report by Amar Ujala, the BCCI has shortlisted 30 players for the Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Japan later this year, with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson among the names under consideration. Suryakumar, however, does not feature in the list despite recently leading the side to the T20 World Cup 2026 triumph.

Two Indian teams to play at same time?

The final 15-member squad will be selected from this long list. As per reports, the deadline to name the squad for the quadrennial could be as soon as June 10. However, the BCCI selectors will have a hard time selecting the squads, since the Indian schedule has been made in such a way that the senior side will already be embroiled in a bilateral series when the Asian Games will be going on.

For those unaware, this year, Japan will host the Asian Games from September 17 to October 3, 2026. Meanwhile, the West Indies are also slated to tour India for five T20Is and 3 ODIs at the very same time. That could be the moment where you can see Team India featured twice on the same day, with different squads altogether.

This means the Asian Games team, just like in the last edition, will feature young names who have done well in the IPL.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi a no-brainer

The biggest talking point from the probable list is the inclusion of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

After what can only be described as one of the greatest breakthrough seasons in T20 history, the Rajasthan Royals opener appears to be inching closer to a senior India debut.

Sooryavanshi finished IPL 2026 as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 776 runs. More remarkably, he scored those runs at a strike rate of 237.31 while smashing a record 72 sixes, breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing mark of 59 maximums in a single T20 competition. He averaged a six almost off every 4.5 deliveries. He’s an anomaly.

The teenager also became the fastest batter in history to reach 1,000 career T20 runs, requiring just 473 balls. His performances became even more extraordinary in the playoffs. He blasted 97 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator before following it up with a mature 96 off 47 deliveries against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

With India playing an ODI series against the West Indies at the same time when the Asian Games will be played, Sooryavanshi will most likely be getting to play in the Games 2026 in Japan.

There is also a possibility that his senior debut arrives even before the Asian Games. India have two T20Is against Ireland in June, a five-match T20I series against England in July, and a tour of Sri Lanka in August. Given his form and the growing calls for his selection, a national call-up appears increasingly difficult to ignore.

Times up for Suryakumar Yadav?

While the inclusion of Sooryavanshi could be a no-brianer, the absence of Suryakumar Yadav could come to reality as well.

The 35-year-old led India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, but his batting returns have declined sharply since taking over the captaincy. As captain, Suryakumar averages around 28.65 in T20Is, a massive drop from his average of 43.40 when not leading the side.

His struggles continued during IPL 2026, where he endured one of the toughest seasons of his career for Mumbai Indians. There is also a belief that the BCCI is planning for the future. With cricket set to return to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028, selectors may be looking to build a younger core capable of carrying the team through the next four-year cycle.
