Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s high-intent batting saw a major high at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. He bossed all the records, took all the glory and almost single-handedly carried the Rajasthan Royals (RR) with aplomb. Now, however, he has been struggling to score big runs. In the ongoing tri-series, while playing for India A, Sooryavanshi has failed to score a single fifty in four games now.
After on-field controversy against Sri Lanka A, Sooryavanshi was expected to reply with his bat. He did for a brief moment. The Afghanistan A bowlers, however, then found a way to trouble him. Although the southpaw enjoys a tremendous record against bouncers, he just couldn’t face them in today’s must-win game. Sooryavanshi was dropped twice, both on short-pitched deliveries before getting holed out on a similar ball.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gets peppered in IND A vs AFG A
There were warning signs almost from the start of Sooryavanshi’s innings. Facing Faridoon Dawoodzai in the opening over, the teenager was beaten outside off stump first ball while attempting an ambitious drive away from his body. A few overs later, he survived a major scare when Afghanistan A thought they had him caught at point. The ball appeared to have touched the ground and the decision eventually went in the batter’s favour, handing him an early lifeline. Otherwise, he would’ve gone out for a duck.
Once settled, Sooryavanshi again looked like the destructive batter who lit up IPL 2026. He drove crisply through the off side, pulled anything short and even launched Abdollah Ahmadzai for a six over backward square leg. In fact, three of his boundaries came against short-pitched bowling as he raced to 38 off just 28 deliveries.
But despite the aggression, Afghanistan A’s pacers continued to test him with bounce and hard lengths. On more than one occasion, Sooryavanshi appeared slightly rushed on the pull and hook, while a carved shot over point nearly resulted in another wicket as the ball landed just short of a diving fielder.
Eventually, the short-ball plan paid off. Having already been troubled by deliveries climbing towards his body, Sooryavanshi once again looked to take on a bouncer from Dawoodzai. This time, however, he could not get enough control on the shot and ended up finding Khalid Taniwal in the deep. The intent is obviously unquestionable, but Sooryavanshi is yet to convert his starts into the kind of big innings India A would have hoped for.
Sooryavanshi for Team India soon
The Indian selectors rewarded Sooryavanshi after an incredible IPL 2026 season with a place in the Indian T20I side. There is a 15-year-old who has been tearing bowling attacks apart as if he has been doing it for years and now he is right on the brink of wearing Indian colours for the first time.
The selectors haven’t waited around as they have picked him in the T20I squad for the upcoming tour of England and Ireland. T20 cricket is his world. He doesn’t grind out runs and wait for the loose ball. He walks in and takes the game on. Fearless swing, fast hands, big hits And the IPL 2026 season made him impossible to ignore. He walked away with the Orange Cap after smashing 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30. He was also the Player of the Tournament and on top of that, had the most sixes. He did it all against some of the best bowlers of the current generation.
