Unfit for Ranji Trophy, Shreyas Iyer set to feature in DY Patil T20 Cup

Shreyas Iyer cited back spasms as reason for missing Mumbai's Ranji Trophy clash and he will now return to action in DY Patil T20 Cup.

The mystery surrounding Shreyas Iyer has deepened. While he has declared himself unfit for the Ranji Trophy, he is likely to play DY Patil T20 Cup 2024 in Mumbai. With no clarity from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), there were reports that Iyer was given all clear by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after he was dropped from the Test team for IND vs ENG Series. However, despite BCCI Secretary Jay Shah asking players to play Ranji Trophy, he pulled out citing back pain.

As per an ESPN Cricinfo report, Shreyas Iyer will feature in the DY Patil T20 Cup alongside Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik Pandya has already played a match in the tournament on Monday.

After scoring 35, 13, 27 & 29 against England in the first two Tests, Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the squad. While he was supposed to play Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, he pulled out after complaining of back spasms.

The batter complained of back spasms after the 2nd Test in Vizag. However, he got NCA’s clearance for the third Test.

But instead of joining the Mumbai squad, he will return to cricket in DY Patil Cup ahead of IPL 2024. He missed the last season with a back injury. Iyer had to undergo a surgery for the injury.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav will feature in the tournament too He is recovering from an ankle surgery. However, he too is unlikely to play Ranji Trophy with IPL 2024 starting March 22. Instead, he will play in DY Patil Cup.

He reported at the NCA for a fitness test. If he gets NCA’s clearance, he will play in the tournament.
