The ugly incident happened after the IND A vs SL A match, where the hosts won in the super over, and few words were spoken to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Just because you’re 15, doesn’t mean you can get away with any actions; someone needs to sit down with India prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and tell him this. On Monday, playing an IND A vs SL A encounter, the prodigy was involved in an after-match altercation with a Lankan player, where he was seen pushing him; the incident occurred after India lost in the super over, taking sheen off the entire match. Now, the question arises, can Sooryavanshi be penalised for this act?

What does the ICC Code of Conduct say?

There has been no official word until now by the ICC, but could very wall fall under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to the ‘Inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.

A call could soon be taken by ICC match referee Pradeep Jeyaprakashdaran, and could invite some sort of penalty. But what could really decide the punishment is, certain factors, which are as follows:

  • 1. the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the contact was deliberate (i.e. intentional), reckless, negligent, and/or avoidable.
  • 2. the force of the contact.
  • 3. any resulting injury to the person with whom contact was made.
  • 4. the person with whom contact was made.

What punishment could Vaibhav Sooryavanshi face?

  • 1. A fine of up to 50 per cent of the player’s match fee.
  • 2. One or two demerit points on the player’s disciplinary record.
  • 3. An official reprimand or warning in less serious cases. (4 demerit points over 24 months can lead to match suspension)

Sooryavanshi vs SL players, what had happened?

IND A made a mess of the super over chase of 17; the pair of Suryansh Shedge and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could only manage 9. Kaguthas Mathulan had managed to take SL A home. It seems a few words were spoken to the teenager while walking back to the pavilion. Suddenly, the Indian was seen charging towards the bowler.

Vishen Halambage then stepped in to calm down the situation, but Sooryavanshi pushed him back. Even senior pro Niroshan Dickwella had to intervene. Earlier in the day, lengthy super over discussions between Tilak Varma, Sooryavanshi and the umpire had taken place, when coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar had to step in.
