Tilak Varma reveals simple yet genius Gautam Gambhir tactic that led to victory in last over thriller

Tilak Varma has in golden form and hasn't been dismissed in his last four innings, scoring 318 runs.

Tilak Varma orchestrated an exceptional victory against England in Chennai. An innings of high quality that covered all the aspects. The southpaw showcased some proper hitting, elite strike rotation/manipulation, and read the situation like someone with a 10 experience at the international level.

Tilak Varma’s calculated 72-run knock

He batted with the openers to the tailenders, leading the charge at every moment. He took Jofra Archer apart with ease and knew that no risk was needed to be taken against Adil Rashid, England’s best bowler. The result was a spectacular last-over victory with just 2 wickets in hand.

Tilak Varma describes all the credit for that victory, but he also tipped his hat to India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, and his simple but effective advice. Having entered the middle after two wickets fell in the India vs. England 1st T20I, this time around he came in at one down.

Gautam Gambhir’s advice to Tilak Varma

This was a strategic ploy by Gambhir. Suryakumar Yadav had failed at number three in the last match, but this time, Tilak came out in the position. To ensure he doesn’t succumb to the pressure of the situation, Gambhir told the batter to keep it simple. No big targets, just look to score 7-8 runs consistently in an over.

“First of all, the wicket was slightly two-paced. One after the other, wickets were falling. Gautam sir told me that you have to bat according to the situation. He told me if we need 7-8 runs an over, then I should look for one boundary every over. Yes, the plan is to come in at no. 3 if a left-right combination is required,” Tilak Varma said in the post-match interview.
