The Ishan Kishan problem, where does he fit in SRH Playing XI?

Ishan Kishan had a forgettable IPL season for MI in 2024, where he scored only 320 runs in 14 matches, at an average of 22.

After a runners-up finish at IPL 2024, SRH would have a lot of expectations from their team and players, to lift the title finally in 2025. But just like the other teams, they too need to get their selection right. And for starters, the management would find it tough to find the best slot for 11.25 Cr buy Ishan Kishan, and check whether he really fits the bill.

Ishan Kishan’s Record at Different Positions

SRH have batters for all positions in abundance, and all good ones. But first it becomes important to look at how he fared at his last team MI, position-wise. In the 84 matches he played for the team, he opened on 49 occasions, and scored 1514 runs at an average of 33, including 11 fifties. At no. 3, in 11 innings, he scored 216 runs at a poor average of 19.

He batted at No. 4 too, and in 22 innings, he scored 583 runs at an average of 29. At no. 5 and 6, with one innings each, there isn’t anything considerable to talk about. So where does Ishan Kishan fit in SRH team? At opening slot there is unmovable Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, who were excellent last year, and scored runs in abundance.

Only Fits at No. 3 at SRH for IPL 2025

Then Heirich Klaasen might be a surety at No. 4 followed by Nitish Reddy at 5 perhaps. The team might also want to rope in a more stable batter, someone like an Abhinav Manohar or Atharva Taide. So, it only makes sense that Ishan is drafted at No. 3. His numbers at the position might not be very heartening for now, but what option does he have?

Anything below No. 4 would be too low for him, and the team won’t be able to extract any benefit from him. So while SRH have other options too at No. 3, Ishan Kishan might be best-suited for now.
