T20 World Cup: PNG makes a debut at the biggest stage: Papua New Guinea are all set to make their maiden World Cup appearance this year. They had their chances two times before but fell short at the last hurdle. But for this year, they were determined to do it and ensured they don’t repeat the previous mistakes. They will be playing Oman in the curtain-raiser on 17 October.

PNG have booked their tickets for the 2021 tournament by virtue of topping a tough Group A in the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, eliminating the need to win do-or-die knockout matches. “It is really a proud moment for me and the boys,” captain Assad Vala said on Thursday.
“It has been a long time coming. We have come so close on so many occasions. We are a couple of days away from playing our first World Cup match. The boys are looking pumped up for the game on Sunday. During this pandemic, it will mean a lot for people back home. We are trying to put a smile on their faces,” he added.

PNG, a team with no fewer than eight all-rounders, will play fearless cricket with their backs against the wall. They have the experience as the core group has remained unchanged over the decade which will come in handy in crunch moments.
