BCCI President Roger Binny and NCA Chief VVS Laxman will meet Harmanpreet Kaur after she was handed a two-game suspension. The Indian Women’s Cricket Team captain created controversy with her outburst in Bangladesh and was subsequently sanctioned by the ICC. Harmanpreet will miss India’s first two Asian Games 2023 matches in Hangzhou with Smriti Mandhana likely to lead.

Speaking to the media, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the Indian Women’s Cricket Team captain will meet the BCCI prez and NCA chief. Harmanpreet Kaur was handed four demerit points for her conduct in Bangladesh. She disrupted the stumps with her bat, before gesturing to the umpire on the decision. Post-game, Kaur criticised the umpiring while also asking them to be invited for the photo op. Both Binny and Laxman are set to question her on her outburst.

ICC Code of Conduct Breach offence:

  • Four or more demerit points within a 24-month period leads to suspension points. The player then receives a suspension.
  • Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player
  • Demerit Points will remain on a Player or Player Support Personnel’s disciplinary record for a period of 24 months.

Kaur admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

Kaur’s reaction garnered widespread criticism from all parts of the world. There is a case for the BCCI to invoke their own code and punish her further. A decision on the same however will be taken only after the meeting. As things stand, she will miss the next two games, with India set to feature in the Asian Games 2023. Harmanpreet will feature in the competition only if India reaches the final. Mandhana, her deputy, will take charge in China.
