583 runs in 13 matches, and third-highest run-getter in IPL 2025. These are the stats of MI’s Suryakumar Yadav, who produced a whirlwind innings of 73 from 43 deliveries, against DC in a virtual quarter-final on Wednesday. His innings included seven four and four sixes, scoring at a strike-rate of 209 in the last five overs, after starting off rather slowly.
Suryakumar Yadav Toys With DC Bowlers
In fact, he went on to score 21 runs in the last over of the innings, against Dushmantha Chameera, to take MI to a formidable 180/5 in 20 overs, on a sluggish Wankhede pitch. Coming in to bat at 48/2 in 5.3 overs, Suryakumar Yadav ensured that he stayed at the wicket till the very end, and forged important partnerships along the way.
But, that isn’t the most important achievement for Surya. He has now equalled the world record, along with Temba Bavuma, for most 25+ scores in T20s. In 2019-20, Bavuma had created a record for 13 such scores, and now Surya has done that too. If that is not enough, he also now holds the record for most 25+ scores, overall in IPL, jointly held with Shubman Gill in 2023, and Kane Williamson in 2018.
Forges Stands With Tilak & Naman
Coming back to the match, first he added 55 runs with Tilak Varma, and then went to string a partnership of 57 in 21 deliveries with Naman Dhir as well. After his classic show, the batter went on to say, “This is one innings which I was hoping for a very long time. A difficult situation I go into bat and I try to bat till the end and get a score which is maybe a little above par.”
Answering whether batting was difficult on this wicket, he said, “It was a slow wicket with the weather around but we had to dig deep, we talked about that during our practice sessions. We knew that the wicket’s going to be like this, so we planned accordingly and that’s the same way we batted.”
Now, Surya is within touching distance of the orange cap holder Sai Sudharsan, who has 617 runs in the league so far.
