Suryakumar Yadav Golden Duck: IND vs AUS Chennai ODI: Is SKY the first batter to score a hat-trick of golden ducks? Probably, first top-order batter, the chatter in the commentary box at Chepauk stadium was visible as World No 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav departed for a first-ball duck for the third consecutive innings. If Mitchell Starc was his nemesis in the first two innings, it was Ashton Agar who dismissed him for the unwanted record. With Sanju Samson waiting in the wings, he will need a miracle to make a comeback to the ODI team when India tour West Indies. Follow India vs Australia LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

SKY was visibly distraught and rightfully so because no batter has ever been out for golden ducks in an ODI series. This is for the first time that a batter has been dismissed for consecutive golden ducks.

He also becomes the 6th Indian batter to score a hat-trick of ducks. Incidentally, his fellow Mumbaikar Sachin Tendulkar too got the record but not on first ball.

Hat-trick of ducks in ODIs for India:

  • Sachin Tendulkar, 1994
  • Anil Kumble, 1996
  • Zaheer Khan, 2003-04
  • Ishant Sharma, 2010-11
  • Jasprit Bumrah, 2017-19
  • Suryakumar Yadav, 2023

Despite his rich exploits in T20 cricket, Suryakumar Yadav has not been able to make a name in ODI cricket. But with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant both out injured, Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma trusted India’s Mr 360 to give India the middle-order boost. The captain-coach duo and the selectors have ignored an in-form Sanju Samson to make way for SKY.

However, with the hat-trick of ducks, it is now unlikely that he will get a nod ahead of Sanju Samson. With Iyer out for 5 months and Pant for 9 months, Sanju Samson could be the next in line to get the nod. Despite immense backing, it will be difficult for Dravid and Rohit to keep SKY in the team. But things could change if SKY delivers for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023.

Ahead of Chennai ODI, Rahul Dravid asked for patience on SKY.

“He has played a lot of T20 cricket in the IPL and then in India colours, but is learning the 50-over game a bit as he has not played enough of it. We need to give him some time and be patient with him,” Dravid said.

As for Rohit Sharma, he said, SKY would get a minimum of 7-10 games to write the wrongs, something Sanju Samson never got.

“Yes, he got out in the last two games and the series before that as well. But he needs that consistent run, like back-to-back games, 7-8 or 10 games like that, so that he feels more comfortable. Right now, he has got in the place when someone has been injured or someone is not available,” Rohit said.
