The emergence of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan effectively ended any chance Shikhar Dhawan had to play another World Cup, be it ODI or T20I. To make things worse for the veteran left-hander, Yashasvi Jaiswal has emerged as the new go-to left-hander opener in all three formats. And with that, it’s all but The End for Shikhar Dhawan. There was a hint when Dhawan was not picked for the Asian Games Cricket. But he is not throwing in the towel yet. He remains undecided about his future even though he is not in the scheme of things.
“I have not spoken to any selector about my future. I keep going to NCA and I enjoy my time there, the facilities are great. NCA has shaped my career and I am grateful for it,” Shikhar Dhawan told the Times of India in an interview.

After a lacklustre Bangladesh tour in December 2022, selectors dropped Shikhar Dhawan from any future ODIs. His off-form coincided with two youngsters slamming double tons in ODIs. Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill both lit up international cricket with commanding displays.
But with both Ishan and Shubma picked for the Asia Cup and World Cup, everyone expected that the BCCI Selection Committee would pick him as the captain for the Asian Games Cricket tournament. However, to everyone’s surprise, selectors named Ruturaj Gaikwad and there was no place for the veteran left-hander even though he had a central contract.
Shikhar Dhawan has opened up on his omission, claiming that he was shocked to find out that he was not part of the Asian Games Cricket.
“When my name was not there for the Asian Games, I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it,” Dhawan said.
