‘Stats & Milestones means nothing’ to Virat Kohli, Star batter hits back at critics

Kohli remained just 13 runs short of his century overnight at stumps, as India recovered from a challenging afternoon session to reach 288-4 against West Indies. Kohli's century marked his 76th ton for India across all formats.

After delivering an outstanding century in the second Test match against the West Indies, Virat Kohli responded assertively to critics, emphasizing that personal records hold limited significance in the long run. In a reflective statement, the star batter expressed that the true measure of success lies not in individual achievements but in the enduring impact one leaves on others.

“I want to contribute as much as possible. If I get 50 the feeling is I missed out on a 100, if I get 120 the feeling is I missed out on a double hundred. These stats and milestones mean nothing in 15 years’ time, what they will remember is if I left an impact or not. I am grateful to play 500 games for India. I never imagined. It’s all hard work. It’s the commitment you give to the sport you are playing which gives you the result,” Virat Kohli said after Day 2 stumps.

At the start of the previous day, Kohli came to bat when India’s score was 153 for 2. He remained just 13 runs short of his century overnight at stumps, as India recovered from a challenging afternoon session to reach 288-4 against West Indies. Kohli’s century marked his 76th ton for India across all formats.

Additionally, with this innings, he moved up to the 10th position on the list of combined appearances in all three formats, with the top spot held by another Indian cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar, with 664 appearances. Virat Kohli achieved his 30th Test 50 with a boundary against left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican (1-55), while Ravindra Jadeja (48 not out) was his batting partner at the crease for the fifth wicket.

He was eventually dismissed for 121 due to a run-out during the match and India’s score was 341-5 at that time. This was only the third time in his Test career that Kohli has been run out. Notably, it was also his first international century overseas since 2018, with his last century in overseas Tests achieved in December 2018 during India’s tour of Australia.

In the end, India’s innings concluded at 438, and the West Indies, led by Captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, had a steady start, managing not to lose a wicket for a significant portion of the session. However, Chanderpaul was eventually dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja, and debutant Kirk McKenzie displayed a fluent start to his innings. The West Indies concluded the day with a score of 86/1, trailing India by 352 runs.
