Covid-19 Scare in Sri Lanka Camp – Will it affect Test Match? Shane McDermott’s was the only positive result from a round of testing that saw all players and staff tested before the series kicks off on Sunday. However, head coach Mickey Arthur, batting coach Grant Flower and physio Brett Harrop are understood to be in close contact and thus have been placed in self-isolation.
While the coaching staff had been training with the national team in Galle in recent days none of the players are being considered as close contacts.
Prof. Arjuna De Silva, the head of Sri Lanka Cricket’s Medical Committee, said, “There has been no direct contacts when it comes to the players. Anti-body tests will be done on the close contacts tomorrow, while another round of testing will be conducted prior to the start of the first Test.” He added that as things stand, there is little chance of the start of the first Test being impacted. All of Sri Lanka’s players and coaching staff are double vaccinated.”

Sri Lanka have had their run-ins with Covid-19 in the past, with Mickey Arthur and three players testing positive earlier this year before their tour of the West Indies. Similarly, a video analyst and Flower tested positive ahead of a home series against India in July. The case comes in as Sri Lanka gradually reopen the country, following a six-week-long lockdown.
Isolation is not the way Mickey Arthur would have imagined the series to have begun, with the Sri Lankan head coach set to step down from his role after the West Indies series. Arthur, who has previously coached South Africa and Pakistan, will be assuming the role of director of cricket with English county Derbyshire. The South African has been part of the Lankan setup since February 2020, overseeing significant improvement during the past 18 months.
