Shubman Gill doubtful for India vs Australia 2nd Test, expected to miss PM’s XI practice match

Shubman Gill doubtful for India vs Australia 2nd Test, expected to miss PM’s XI practice match

It's uncertain who'll bat at number 3 if Gill indeed isn't available for the second Test.

Shubman Gill remains doubtful for the India vs Australia 2nd Test. Everyone assumed that the 25-year-old has made some headway after turning up to the nets at the Manuka Oval for India’s practice match against the Prime Minister’s (PM) XI, but that isn’t the case.

Gill had sustained a finger injury on November 16 during some fielding drills at the WACA that had ruled him out of the Perth Test, and reports suggested that his participation in the Adelaide match was at risk as well. When Gill rocked up in the nets, it felt like the reports were wrong and he’d gotten back to his best before the prescribed recovery time (10-14 days).

Shubman Gill, out of India vs Australia 2nd Test

That isn’t the case. Gill probably won’t take the field for the India vs PM’s XI match and also remains doubtful for the pink ball Test in Adelaide. Now, it seems December 14 (3rd Test in Brisbane) will be the first time Gill plays in Australia.

“Gill was advised a two-week rest by the medical specialist after suffering the injury to his thumb. Today was just about how he ‘feels’ the ball while batting in the nets. He’s desperate to return and contribute to the team. While he’s likely to miss the warm-up match from Saturday and is still doubtful for the second Test, he’ll certainly be back from the third Test onwards,” a BCCI source told the Times of India.

This corroborates what Abhishek Nayar said yesterday (November 29). The Indian assistant coach had hinted towards Gill missing the 2-day practice match. He’d stated so after Gill had some throwdown practice from Ryan ten Doeschate, which was followed by facing Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna in the nets.

“Gill is batting, and the evaluation will be done by physios. He looked comfortable while batting. I do not know if he will feature in the warm-up match,” Nayar said in Canberra.
