Shubham Dubey’s big impact: Rajasthan Royals set for IPL 2024, says former India star

Shubham Dubey boasts an impressive T20 record, having scored 485 runs in 19 innings with a strikingly high rate of 145.20.

The Rajasthan Royals have made a significant addition to their squad for the upcoming IPL 2024, securing the services of Shubham Dubey, a talented lower-middle-order batsman, in the auction. Aakash Chopra, renowned cricket commentator and former Indian opener, believes that Dubey’s inclusion is a strategic move that will strengthen the Royals’ batting lineup.

Dubey, hailing from Vidharbha, was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals for a substantial ₹5.80 crore during last month’s auction. The franchise, with a clear focus on reinforcing their lower-middle order, also secured the services of Rovman Powell for ₹7.40 crore, adding another power-hitting option to their middle-order arsenal.

In a recent video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra commended the Rajasthan Royals for their targeted approach in the auction, particularly in addressing the need for impactful batters in the lower-middle order. Chopra expressed his approval of the team’s strategy, emphasizing the clarity in their objective.

“They went with an extremely clear strategy into the auction, that they need batters who can bat down the order. For that, they first started bidding for Rovman Powell, who interestingly enough came in the first set, and they went after him. They said they needed him. I liked the clarity,” remarked Chopra in the video.

The former cricketer highlighted the challenge of securing an Indian finisher in the auction and lauded the Rajasthan Royals for successfully acquiring Shubham Dubey. Describing Dubey as a left-hander with a background in tennis-ball cricket, Chopra emphasized his ability to “tonk the ball properly,” making him a valuable addition to the team’s firepower.

Shubham Dubey boasts an impressive T20 record, having scored 485 runs in 19 innings with a strikingly high rate of 145.20. Additionally, his List A performances, including 159 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 90.34, add versatility to his batting prowess.

Reflecting on the Rajasthan Royals’ challenges in IPL 2023, Chopra pointed out their struggle to effectively utilize the Impact Player rule. Despite the team’s emphasis on analytics, Chopra noted that they lacked depth in both batting and bowling departments, with an imbalance in their playing XI.

“Rajasthan, for a very strange reason, although they are a team that lays a lot of emphasis on analytics, a lot of people say that they can make their XI based on numbers, but despite that, they just could not crack the Impact Player rule,” stated Chopra.

He further highlighted the team’s reliance on a limited number of bowlers and batsmen, contributing to their underwhelming performance in the previous season.

Acknowledging Jos Buttler’s inconsistent form as a factor, Chopra emphasized that the Royals have the potential to bounce back, especially with promising talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and Shimron Hetmyer in their ranks. As the IPL 2024 approaches, the acquisition of Shubham Dubey emerges as a key move for the Rajasthan Royals, and fans eagerly await the electrifying performances he will bring to the cricketing extravaganza.
