Shreyas Iyer set to make comeback to Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad after shoulder injury

Shreyas Iyer’s journey through multiple surgeries and intensive rehabilitation has shaped his approach to the game.

Mumbai’s star batsman Shreyas Iyer is set to return to the Ranji Trophy, strengthening the Mumbai squad in their upcoming match against Odisha on November 6 at the MCA ground in BKC as per TOI. After missing the previous match due to a shoulder injury, Iyer’s comeback is a significant boost for Mumbai, who are looking to climb up the Elite Group A standings.

Challenging road to recovery for Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer, who has faced multiple injuries in recent years, opted out of Mumbai’s last match against Tripura, which ended in a draw. His decision to sit out was made to allow time for recovery and manage his long-standing shoulder issues. This shoulder problem, stemming from a partial dislocation, led to surgery in April 2021, causing him to miss key tournaments, including part of the IPL and the T20 World Cup.

In addition to his shoulder struggles, Shreyas Iyer has dealt with a serious back injury that required surgery in London. His recent stint in the Asia Cup and World Cup highlighted his commitment to fitness, though it hasn’t been without setbacks. Reflecting on his journey, Iyer noted that he’s become “smart” about managing his body, carefully balancing his cricketing ambitions with the need to stay physically resilient.

Mumbai’s lineup remains unchanged

With Iyer back, the rest of the Mumbai squad remains the same for the Odisha clash. Prithvi Shaw, meanwhile, continues his MCA-directed fitness programme and is absent from the team sheet. Shaw’s absence has allowed other players to step up, though his return is eagerly anticipated as Mumbai seeks to bolster its batting lineup.

Mumbai currently stands fourth in Elite Group A, with nine points from their first three games, including one win, one defeat, and a draw. Iyer’s presence is expected to energise the squad and add depth to the batting, critical as Mumbai aims to secure more victories and solidify their position.

Eyes on future

Shreyas Iyer’s journey through multiple surgeries and intensive rehabilitation has shaped his approach to the game. His return to domestic cricket with Mumbai is not just a step towards regaining his full form but also an opportunity for the batsman to reinforce his adaptability and leadership within the team. For now, Mumbai’s focus is firmly set on Odisha, with Iyer’s experience and skill playing a pivotal role in their Ranji Trophy campaign.
