Shreyas Iyer continues to prove why he is a crucial part of India’s ODI setup. Despite his consistent performances, his place in the playing XI is often debated, as if he averages in the low 30s. But Iyer, time and again, silences his critics with his aggressive intent, reliability under pressure, and ability to dominate both pace and spin. This time, he was simply unstoppable against England in the first ODI in Nagpur.
Shreyas Iyer at his best in 1st IND vs ENG ODI
In the recent ODI against England, Iyer delivered a stunning knock, dismantling the opposition’s short-ball strategy with fearless stroke play. He came to the crease after India lost both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma and was on song right from the start. Fresh off a stellar domestic campaign, Iyer was in attacking mode. Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler tried to target him with express pace and short deliveries, but Iyer responded with back-to-back sixes, one of them crossing 90 meters.
This isn’t a one-off display. Iyer was instrumental in India’s 2023 World Cup campaign, playing a match-winning knock against South Africa and delivering under immense pressure in the semi-final against New Zealand. He made 530 runs at an incredible average and SR of 66.2 and 113.2 in the tournament. His ability to soak in pressure and accelerate when needed makes him the backbone of India’s middle order. Since the ODI World Cup 2023, he has made 678 runs at 61.63 and at a strike rate of 116.49.
