Shreyas Iyer’s cheap dismissal in IND vs AUS 1st ODI raises concern ahead of WC

Shreyas Iyer was playing his first game after recovering from back spasm which he sustained before IND vs PAK Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 clash.

Shreyas Iyer had a poor day in IND vs AUS 1st ODI as he failed to make an impact with both bat and on the field. After dropping a costly catch of David Warner, the 28-year-old departed cheaply through run-out. The right-handed batter scored just 3 off 8 balls during his stay before he was run out.

The dismissal happened in the 24th over of India’s run-chase. Iyer played towards cover and took off for a quick run. However, Cameron Green immediately collected the ball and threw it to wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis, who dislodged the bails in a flash.

Fitness & Form – A big concern for Shreyas Iyer ahead of World Cup

Earlier, Iyer had dropped an easy catch to give a life to David Warner on 14.

Notably, this was Shreyas Iyer’s first game after recovering from back spasm which he suffered before IND vs PAK Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 clash.

Iyer previously scored 14 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 group-stage game.

Iyer has been battling with injuries since April. The right-hand batter returned to Indian squad for Asia Cup 2023 after recovering from shoulder injury. He played against Pakistan and Nepal before back spasm forced him out of rest Team India’s matches.

Since his return from injury, Iyer has played only 17 balls in two games. He, however, has two more opportunities to prove his form in the ongoing series to cement his spot in XI for the ODI World Cup 2023 at home.

Team India Playing XI: Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk) (c), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami
