“Should give Gambhir time”: Ganguly backs struggling India coach ahead of IND vs ENG 1st T20I

CAB president Snehasish Ganguly threw his weight behind India head coach Gautam Gambhir and urged people to give him some time

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly backed an under fire India head coach Gautam Gambhir, opining that he needs to be given more time. His remarks come just ahead of IND vs ENG 1st T20I where the former India cricketer will hope to make a quick turnaround after suffering humiliating series losses in the latter part of 2024. A lot of questions have been raised on the approach of Gambhir and his support staff.

CAB’s Ganguly backs Gambhir to succeed

Speaking to news agency ANI ahead of the IND vs ENG 1st T20I in Kolkata, Ganguly stressed on the need to give Gambhir more time, pointing out that it had been just months since he had taken over the reins from Rahul Dravid. He pointed out that the ex-India opener had brought success to defending IPL champions as a coach, adding that he was happy with the southpaw’s approach.

I feel happy because of his approach. As a coach, he got success for KKR after 12 years. We should give him some time. It has been some months since he has been handling the team after Rahul Dravid,” Ganguly said.

Gambhir’s era started off on a losing note, with the coach suffering his first series defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the ODI series. Next, India lost to New Zealand in the three-match Test series at home, creating an unwanted history. Things only went from bad to worse as Rohit Sharma and co. conceded the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in 10 years after losing the series 1-3.

Gambhir’s choices in team selection and his approach have been criticised. However, the BCCI has decided to allow the cricketer to carry on his role as head coach despite the setbacks. Gambhir will now be aiming to start off the fresh white-ball leg on a positive note as India gear up for the ICC Champions Trophy which will take place right after IND vs ENG T20Is and ODIs.
