Babar Azam has been reappointed as the captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team in white ball format. Following the reappointment, former Pakistan star Shahid Afridi has expressed his surprise at the decision. It is to be noted that Babar retakes the captain’s role from Shaheen Afridi who lead the Men in Green for a solitary T20I series.
After a disappointing ODI World Cup 2023 campaign, Babar Azam left the captaincy. As a result, the PCB opted for a split captaincy. But recent, poor performances by Pakistan has prompted the PCB to reinstate the 29-year-old as the captain of the team in white ball format.
Shahid Afridi was pleasantly surprised with the decision. He took to social media to express his reactions. He took a dig at the Selection Committee claiming if a change was needed, Mohammad Rizwan would have been the best fit.
“I am surprised by the decision by very experienced cricketers in the selection committee. I still believe that if change was necessary than Rizwan was the best choice! But since now the decision has been made I offer my full support and best wishes to team Pakistan and Babar Azam,” Afridi wrote on social media.
Shaheen Afridi’s tenure as T20I captain consisted of a 1-4 loss at the hands of New Zealand. But with the ICC T20 World Cup on the horizon, PCB needed to make a decision about the captain. And thus, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi appointed Babar as the captain of the team.
