R Ashwin, who recently announced his retirement, and expressed his views over the prevailing situation. He said, he also sympathises with the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar.

“I mean, I don’t want to be the chairman of selectors or team manager or be in this decision-making position,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. “In the upcoming IPL season, if both [Shubman] Gill and Ruturaj [Gaikwad] score runs, it’s going to be a problem of plenty (for the selectors). As fans of the Indian cricket team, we are blessed to have a pool of such talented players.”
There is always 4-5 players vying for just one spot in the team. Just imagine, a player like Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been prolific in the domestic circuit, hasn’t become a regular in Team India till now. But then, Ashwin gave a guru mantra for the selectors.
Preference Should be Given to Tough Players
“Going forward, we must ensure that whatever the performances are, we will have to focus on pressure parameters for a big tournament. We will have to give some weightage to players who do well under pressure. Because, in modern cricket, there are plenty of talented players who time the ball very well,” he added.
There have been a lot of questions asked around, the non-selection of Rishabh Pant in the T20I series, where he is playing the Ranji Trophy. Then, there is also talks as to why Yashasvi Jaiswal not included in the T20I team. Another question about Mohammed Siraj’s exclusion from the Champions Trophy team has arisen.
