Sarfaraz Khan’s brother Musheer Khan bottles IPL debut after Punjab Kings’ SOS

Musheer Khan was thrust to rescue Punjab Kings from a collapse, but feel for a three-ball duck.

Punjab Kings’ return to the playoffs after 11 years did not go as per plan. Facing RCB at home in IPL 2025 Qualifier 1, Shreyas Iyer and Co put in their worst batting performance of the season. In dire straits, PBKS handed Sarfaraz Khan’s brother Musheer Khan his IPL debut, but it didn’t have the desired effect in Mullanpur.

Musheer Khan’s IPL debut falls flat in IPL 2025 Qualifier 1

Punjab Kings were in tatters at Mullanpur. Aiming to pull off a rescue, coach Ricky Ponting sent Musheer Khan into the middle as an impact sub. Khan, the brother of Sarfaraz Khan, was making his first ever appearance in the IPL. The 20-year-old was a star for India U-19 in their World Cup win. He has since featured for Mumbai in domestic cricket, scoring a century in the Ranji Trophy final in the 2023/24 season.

However, Musheer Khan’s debut did not go as per plan. The 20-year-old was bamboozled by Suyash Sharma. Musheer could only survive for a couple of deliveries, before being trapped in front of the stumps. Khan did take a review, but too no avail as he fell victim without scoring. He did however chip in with the ball, picking up the wicket of Mayank Agarwal with ball in hand.

Following Musheer’s dismissal, Punjab Kings folded to 101 all out in 14.1 overs. It is the the least overs batted by any team in the IPL playoffs. It is the joint 3rd-lowest score in the knockout stages.

For Musheer, he will hope to put the disappointment of his IPL debut and build on a career. His brother Sarfaraz Khan was the youngest ever to play an IPL game in 2015, featuring for RCB. Sarfaraz later went onto feature for Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. Now a red ball specialist, he was unsold ahead of IPL 2025 Auctions.
