Sarfaraz Khan shines with second Irani Cup century, anchors Mumbai against Rest of India

Sarfaraz Khan hit his second Irani Cup century for Mumbai, as he and Ajinkya Rahane’s partnership steadied the team against Rest of India.

Sarfaraz Khan struck a brilliant century for Mumbai on Wednesday during the second day of the Irani Cup 2024-25 match at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. The Mumbai batter smashed 14 boundaries, reaching his century in 149 balls, marking his 15th First-Class century. This is Sarfaraz’s second ton in the Irani Cup, his first being 138 runs against Saurashtra in the 2022 edition.

Crucial partnership with Rahane

Walking in with Mumbai at 139 for four, Sarfaraz built a vital 131-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane for the fifth wicket, stabilizing the innings. Rahane missed his century by three runs, he eventually got out for 97 runs.

Sarfaraz joined the Mumbai squad just a day before the match after being released from the Indian team following the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.

Irani cup Day-2

At the time of writing, Mumbai have scored 338 runs for 6 wickets against Rest of India. Sarfaraz is batting on 103, while Tanush Kotian is at the crease with 26 runs. For Rest of India, Mukesh Kumar has taken 4 wickets, while Yash Dayal managed to claim two wickets. Earlier, on Day 1, Rest of India captain Ruturaj Gaikwad chose to field after winning the toss. Mumbai posted 237/4 in 68 overs.
