Sanju Samson to take Impact Player lessons at Rajasthan Royals captaincy return

Riyan Parag took the responsibility of being the Rajasthan Royals captain when Sanju Samson wasn't allowed to keep wickets.

The wait for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) is finally over. Talisman Sanju Samson is ready and roaring to lead the franchise once again after getting clearance to keep wickets from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. Samson had to play as an impact substitute in the first three Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 matches for the Royals.

Sanju Samson ready to lead RR

Speaking to reporters prior to RR’s fourth match of the IPL 2025, against the Punjab Kings (PBKS). Now, he is looking to bank on the experience he got while remaining on the bench as an Impact sub. While Riyan Parag captained RR on the field, Samson was just a spectator, talking strategies with head coach Rahul Dravid and other RR staff.

“To be very honest, I was a bit surprised. I was like ‘Ho jayega teen match bahar baithna hai’ (I was thinking it would pass quickly as it’s only a matter of three games).”

But missing three games, I was just holding myself back and seeing the game from a different perspective. So, it was a bit of a different learning experience… to sit in the dug-out and see my brothers fighting it out there. So to be honest, I am pretty excited to be back and to be fully fit to keep wickets and to bat,” Samson said on the pre-match press conference.

During Sanju Samson’s stint as an impact sub, Riyan Parag took the reins as captain for the Rajasthan Royals‘ first three matches.

Although the team suffered losses in their initial two games – a 44-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad and an eight-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders – they bounced back with a thrilling six-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati.
