The omission of Sanju Samson, from the Zimbabwe T20Is has caused a huge furor in the country. Just about everyone feels that the Kerala batter should have been in the team. Instead the BCCI selectors went on to pick Prabhsimran Singh as a back up opener, while Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were persisted with. To this Robin Uthappa has raised a valid point — what happens if all the selected three get big runs against Zimbabwe?
What happens if Prabhsimran Singh scores?
The former India batter also went on to add, that if Sanju Samson is rested, then the same should be communicated to him. “What happens now if Prabhsimran Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi get big runs in Zimbabwe? Zimbabwe is a happy hunting ground for Vaibhav too, having scored big in the Under-19 World Cup. Does Prabh then get released and Sanju comes back? Based on what happens then, there will be clarity and players will also realize if there is a sense of security at all in this job,” Uthappa said on his Youtube channel.
“If he is being rested, then that needs to be communicated. Because we’ve seen this before, where a player is said to be rested but never returns. Hopefully this is an informed decision that restores faith in the process. Maybe they prove us wrong and that there is actually a process-oriented selection system there. When players have second-hand experiences like these, it makes them feel very insecure.”
Sanju Samson exclusion raises serious questions
Uthappa added that it was the right call to have Sooryavanshi in the setup. Notwithstanding a fixed position, he can even bat at no.3, and can be a replacement to Ishan Kishan. “Vaibhav needs to be in the setup. That part is definitely right. He can either open or bat at No.3 so that he can be the replacement for one of the openers or Ishan Kishan,” said Uthappa.
Earlier in the day, as per PTI, a senior official did offer the explanation on Sanju’s absence. “Why is this surprising that Sanju has been rested for Zimbabwe? People who are saying this ,should know Sanju is in the Asian Games squad in September. So those who are criticising the selection committee can do a bit of homework. What’s the point of carrying Samson when he won’t play? He is a senior guy,” the senior source said.
