‘Sachin Tendulkar used to…”: Ashwin shuts down the hype on Virat Kohli’s Ranji Trophy return

Ashwin asked the fans to pay more attention to Ranji Trophy as he addressed the frenzy over the return of Virat Kohli to the tourney

Former India cricketer R Ashwin played down the hype on Virat Kohli‘s return to Ranji Trophy after a gap of 12 years. The ex-Indian skipper’s return to the domestic red-ball tournament was greeted by a packed Arun Jaitley stadium, a never-seen-before fanfare for a first-class game. However, Ashwin had a different take on the all the attention showered on the Delhi vs Railways game and urged fans to pay more attention to the Ranji tournament.

Ashwin on all the hype over Virat Kohli’s Ranji return

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin reckoned that such crowds should turn up for every Ranji Trophy game instead of just one. Referring to a tweet over Virat Kohli’s return which said “Ranji Trophy is blessed”, the Tamil Nadu spinner asked the fans if they even knew about the history of the tournament and pointed that it was one of the premier tourneys in India. He further noted that even the legendary Sachin Tendulkar used to play Ranji Trophy at all times, adding that for a player, cricket was always important and not vice-versa.

It’s a great thing when it comes to Virat Kohli. He is extremely motivated. I know that. His intention is to play Test cricket and do well. I actually think he has a lot left in the tank. But all said and done, the crowd that turned up, it was great. Such crowds should be there for every Ranji Trophy match,” Ashwin said.

Sachin Tendulkar, who is a legendary cricketer, used to play the Ranji Trophy at all times. Players benefit from playing in the tournament. For cricket, players are not important, but for players, cricket is very important,” he added.

While Kohli’s return was met with crazy fanfare, it only lasted for 15 deliveries. The batter managed to score just 6 runs before his off stump was sent cartwheeling by Himanshu Sangwan. A stellar five-wicket haul from Shivam Sharma meant Delhi won the match and hence there was no opportunity for Virat to bat again.
