Sabko young captain chahiye: Rohit Sharma ‘Shocking’ remarks after announcing Test retirement

While stepping away from Test cricket, Rohit has set his sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup, expressing his determination to lead India to another title.

Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world. The Indian skipper, who led the team in multiple high-stakes matches, announced his decision on May 7, 2025, through an Instagram post. His statement confirmed that he would continue playing in the ODI format but would step away from the longest format of the game.

Rohit’s retirement comes amid speculation that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was considering replacing him as Test captain. Reports suggested that selectors were looking for a younger leader to take charge of the team for the upcoming England tour.

Everyone needs young captain: Rohit Sharma

Haan mujhe laga aise. Kabhi kabhi hota hai sabko young captain chahiye hota hai. Jo 10 saal, 15 saal captaincy kare toh mujhe aise laga ki abb mujhe na mile. But I am forever grateful ki mujhe mauka mila,” he said in an exclusive to a senior Indian sports journalist.

His decision was not entirely unexpected, as sources close to the cricketer revealed that he had been contemplating retirement since India’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy. Despite his struggles in recent Test series, Rohit remained a key figure in Indian cricket, having scored over 4,300 runs in 67 Tests with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

While stepping away from Test cricket, Rohit has set his sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup, expressing his determination to lead India to another title. His leadership in white-ball cricket remains crucial, and fans will be eager to see how he continues to shape India’s ODI squad.
