Rohit Sharma’s form & fitness will decide 2027 ODI World Cup participation, says ex-BCCI selector

Rohit Sharma hasn't ruled out the possibility of playing the 2027 World Cup, having won two ICC titles in 9 months.

Rohit Sharma wishes to continue playing ODIs for the India cricket team. Many speculated that he’d retire after lifting the ICC Champions Trophy, but the Indian captain ruled that possibility out. Since Rohit has retired from T20Is and Team India hasn’t qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025, the next ICC event he can play is the ODI World Cup 2027.

Form and fitness to decide Rohit Sharma’s retirement

Rohit hasn’t confirmed whether his target is the event, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of it happening either. If you ask former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Chairman of Selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, he thinks that the Indian captain’s form and fitness will decide whether he’ll be playing in the ODI World Cup 2027.

“I am not an astrologer. A lot of matches to go till the 2027 World Cup. A lot will depend on his form and fitness. It is not fair to say anything at this stage, but he has been outstanding as both captain and player. I don’t know why people speculated (on his retirement); it’s unwarranted. A player of his stature should get to decide about his future,” Vengsarkar told PTI.

Rohit Sharma’s approach is commendable

The 1983 World Cup winner lauded Rohit Sharma‘s approach. From striking at 73 in the powerplay until 2021, he’s now at 120 from 2022. He also played a major role in the ICC Champions Trophy Final. On current form, he would make the ODI World Cup 2027, but that event is two years later; no one can predict what will happen.

“The way he has been playing all this time is nothing short of exemplary. He has got three double hundreds in ODI. What more do I say about him? Guys like Virat and Rohit are big match players; the bigger the platform, the better the performance. It is very important from the team’s point of view. Their sheer presence is demoralising the opposition,” Vengsarkar added.
