The home team, India, were the favourite to win the World Cup—their second under the leadership of MS Dhoni—and when they advanced to the semi-finals, it appeared as though a billion dreams might just come true. However, on March 31, 2016, they were defeated by the West Indies in an enthralling contest at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
India were asked to bat first after Daren Sammy won the toss. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane put on a 62-run opening stand, with Rohit scoring 43 runs off only 31 balls while Rahane scored 40 runs off just 35 balls. However, it was Virat Kohli’s outstanding unbeaten 89-run innings that propelled India to a threatening total of 192/2.
India appeared to be headed for triumph when they quickly removed Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels. However, it was not to be.
Johnson Charles, the fourth batter for the Windies, and Lendl Simmons set up a 97-run third-wicket partnership. Charles scored 52 runs off 36 balls while hitting 2 sixes and 7 fours. After that, Andre Russell and Simmons put up an 80-run unbeaten partnership.
Russell scored 43 runs off only 20 balls while blasting 4 sixes and 4 fours. With his game-winning innings, that included five sixes and seven fours off only 51 deliveries, Simmons remained unbeaten at 82.
West Indies went into the World T20 final with two balls to spare after Russell smashed a six and four off Virat Kohli in the last over.
- 2011 – Indore, 4th ODI: India won by 153 runs
The main reason for the popularity of this match, which took place on December 8, 2011, in Indore, is that Virender Sehwag became the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to score a double century in a one-day international.
The Nawab of Najafgarh led the team in Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s absence and destroyed the West Indies bowling attack with a swashbuckling 219 off 149 balls that included 7 sixes and 25 fours. With significant contributions from Gautam Gambhir’s (67) and Suresh Raina’s (55), India finished with their highest ODI total at that time (418/5).
West Indies never looked comfortable chasing such a huge target as India registered a mammoth 153-run win. The Windies were bowled out for 265 runs despite Denesh Ramdin’s 96.
- 1993 – Kolkata, Hero Cup final: India won by 102 runs
At Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens, the final of Hero Cup was played between India and the West Indies.
After losing the toss, the Men in Blue, captained by Mohammed Azharuddin, were asked to bat first. India scored 225 runs, with Vinod Kamble leading the way with a knock of 68.
While chasing the modest total, West Indies’ pursuit never got underway as Indian spin bowling legend Anil Kumble delivered a spell for the ages. Kumble bowled 6.1 overs, claimed 6 wickets, and leaked only 12 runs. He dismissed Curtly Ambrose, Anderson Cummins, Jimmy Adams, Roland Holder, Carl Hooper, Roland Holder, and Roland Holder as India romped to a massive 102-run victory.
Apart from Kumble, Kapil Dev took two wickets while Manoj Prabhakar and Sachin Tendulkar scalped one wicket each.
