Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal frontrunners to become new Test vice-captain amid captaincy conundrum

Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal frontrunners to become new Test vice-captain amid captaincy conundrum

Ever since his return after horrific accident, Rishabh Pant has been a regular for India in Test Cricket

The India Cricket Team is going to be under a massive transition, especially in the Test format. While the tenure of Rohit Sharma as the captain is nearing its end, it also creates an opening for the vice captain’s spot as well. It is understood that Jasprit Bumrah will be the new captain and either Rishabh Pant or Yashasvi Jaiswal is now considered to take the spot of the vice-captain.

According to a report by the PTI, the two young southpaws are next in line to be the new deputy to the captain. But it is Rishabh Pant who is ahead in the pecking order to be the vice-captain.

As per the report, the BCCI Selectors are keen on selecting a stable vice-captain for the team. It is also important to understand that Shubman Gill’s name has been dropped. The young player was gradually next in line to be the new all-format captain of the Indian team. He was previously the vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. But now the dynamics have shifted. Axar Patel is the new vice-captain in T20Is.

And now in Tests, Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s name has made the list. The young player has no experience in leadership, given he joined the team a little over a year back. In the meantime, Rishabh Pant looks to be a stable option. Pant has previously captained sides in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has a fair bit of leadership capabilities. However, the same can’t be said about Yashasvi Jaiswal.

On the other hand, there are also lingering doubts about Jasprit Bumrah as the new Test captain. Given the injury record of the ace pacer, Bumrah won’t be a long-term option to lead the charge for the team. Thus having stable vice-captain options for the long term would be beneficial to the team.
