Rishabh Pant describes 2023 as ‘tough’ year with ‘lots of learning’

Pant was seriously injured in a car accident in December 2022, sustaining injuries to his forehead, right knee, wrist, ankle, and toe, along with abrasions on his back

2023 has been a harrowing year for Rishabh Pant. The southpaw, who established himself as one of the mainstays of Indian cricket team, suffered a major accident which kept him out of cricket for quite a while. Pant on Monday described 2023 as a tough year. However, the wicketkeeper also claimed he learnt a lot this year.

Pant was seriously injured in a car accident in December 2022 on the Dehradun-Delhi highway. He sustained injuries to his forehead, right knee, wrist, ankle, and toe, along with abrasions on his back. His brain and spinal cord were not affected in the accident.

Pant fell asleep while driving, causing the accident. In January, Rishabh underwent a successful knee surgery at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute.

Following the accident, the star batter missed some crucial tournaments and matches in the year such as IPL 2023, World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup. It has been over a year since the southpaw played an international match.

Rishabh Pant’s rehabilitation was closely monitored by the BCCI, which included strength and conditioning sessions as well as batting sessions. In August, reports from the BCCI showed Pant to be pain-free and able to handle fast bowlers in the nets, which bode well for Pant’s return to the Indian fold.

Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly announced a few days ago that Pant will be fit and ready to play in IPL 2024. “If he is not keeping, he will definitely be on the field and will lead the side,”  A DC official told Cricbuzz.

But as Pant’s comeback draws near, how did he fare in the departing year which brought a lot of pain and forced him to stay out of cricket? Replying to a post on X (previously Twitter) which asked people to mention 2023 in one word, Pant said, “Tough & lots of learning.”
