Rating Bangladesh’s ICC Champions Trophy squad: 6/10 for Tigers sans Shakib al Hasan, Litton Das

Bangladesh face an uphill task in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, entering the tourney without veterans Shakib al Hasan and Litton Das

Bangladesh aren’t exactly entering the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with their strongest side. For starters, they have left out two veterans who are arguably some of the best ODI players – Litton Das and Shakib al Hasan. On the other hand, there are some bigwigs that will make their return to the side for the marquee event. This includes captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mustafizur Rahman Towhid Hridoy.

Lack of experienced Bangladesh opening pair

Bangladesh chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain explained that Litton Das’ poor form had led to his exclusion from the side. With 2569 runs from 94 matches, he is arguably one of the best openers for the side. In the absence of Litton, now Bangladesh will have turn towards young Tanzid Hasan to become Soumya Sarkar’s opening partner. Tanzid has played just 21 matches so far and has 413 runs to his name, since making his debut in 2023. The inexperienced opening pair can cost Bangladesh dearly at the top order.

No Shakib al Hasan could spell trouble for Tigers

Shakib al Hasan’s exclusion from Bangladesh’s ICC Champions Trophy side is perhaps the biggest omission. Given that Shanto, Rahim and Hridoy comprise of a formidable middle-order backed by Mahmadullah and Miraz, none of them can provide the edge that the experienced all-rounder could have. It is also pertinent to mention that this would be the last tournament for Rahim and Mahmadullah as they have kept themselves in the fray only to try their luck in bringing some success for Champions Trophy.

Bowling not of a much concern

Bangladesh’s bowling line-up will be the least of the worries. The pace-unit comprises of a strong unit, featuring the likes of Rahman, Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana. The spin unit, too, is well complimented, featuring the likes of Miraz, Mahmadullah, Hossain. Additionally, the Tigers can also depend on their bench strength to provide them the back-up as and when required. However, they might have to switch their strategy for their game against India which will be held in Dubai.
