The 11th season of PSL, that is set to take place next year, might see an increase of two teams in the competition, tournament COO Salman Naseer said. PSL started way back in 2016 with five teams — Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators – with the sixth team, Multan Sultans being added to the roster in 2018.
PSL Has Expansion Plans
“By the end of this year, we might get two more teams,” Naseer told local media. “We started at a time when no cricket was happening in Pakistan. The challenge was to bring it back. Now that we’ve successfully brought cricket back to traditional centres, the next step is expanding beyond these four cities (Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan).”
Now, this year, during PSL 10, one of the biggest challenges for the league will be to compete against IPL, that is scheduled to clash with the Pakistani tournament dates. The tournament would start on April 11 and would end on May 18, while the IPL will start from March 22, and would end on May 25.
COO Says, By the End of the Year
“This year will be an interesting test, and with more teams, we anticipate a bigger window,” Naseer added. “Some of our rights are up for valuation after this PSL. A lot will depend on the data we gather.” Meanwhile in season 9, Islamabad United had emerged winners after beating Multan Sultans in the final.
The latter had topped the points table though, having won 7 matches out of 10 played. Shaheen Shah Afridi‘s Lahore Qalandars had finished on the last spot with one win to their name in the entire tournament.
