Prithvi Shaw burst into international cricket impressively, joining the ranks of the youngest century-makers in Tests, including Sachin Tendulkar. Yet, inconsistent form led to his sidelining. Despite this, he continues to display his skill. Recently, he struck a record-breaking double century (244 off 153 balls) for Northamptonshire in the Royal One Day Cup, becoming the first Indian to achieve this in List A matches on English soil. Although unaware initially, he’s delighted with his performance.

“Oh am I? I didn’t know that. But, it feels great and hopefully, I can score more. I try not to think too much and take each game at a time. My main priority when I bat is to score runs for my team and make the team win games. But, I feel I am hitting the ball well and I hope that my runs do the talking,” Shaw told TOI.

In the previous Ranji Trophy season, Prithvi Shaw achieved a massive feat by amassing 379 runs against Assam, surpassing Sanjay Manjrekar’s record (377) for the highest individual innings score in Mumbai. This score also marked the second-highest ever achieved in the history of the Ranji Trophy. With a maiden triple century in first-class cricket and two double centuries in List A matches, he has proven his knack for monumental scores.

This recent exceptional performance will certainly keep his name in consideration. Before his remarkable double century, Prihtvi Shaw had a challenging year. His performance in the IPL was lackluster, scoring only 106 runs in eight matches with a discouraging average of 13.25. This decline in form pushed him down the hierarchy, especially as competitors like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, vying for the opening slot, delivered stellar performances.

A visa delay added to the complexity, affording Prithvi Shaw only a brief period to familiarize himself with the English conditions. These conditions diverge notably from those in India, characterized by the persistent movement of the ball throughout the day. This factor posed an extra layer of difficulty for Shaw as he sought to perform under these challenging circumstances.

“As a modern cricketer, it is important to adapt to all the conditions. Initially, England was cold and rainy so I wore jumpers to keep myself warm. I am very grateful for my friend Brindon Bagirathan and Northamptonshire CCC for giving me this opportunity. I just want to keep winning games for Northampton and hopefully the rest will be given,” Prithvi Shaw said.
