Pakistan’s squad for Champions Trophy ‘under review’ after severe criticism, confirms PCB Chairman

Pakistan, like all the other teams, has until January 12 to announce their final squad for the tournament. However, changes to the team can be made later after taking special permission from the ICC or in case of an injury.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) might tweak the Pakistan cricket team’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Having named the 15-man team on January 31, the PCB was heavily criticised. Granted, Saim Ayub’s injury messed up their plans, but rogue picks left many scratching their heads.

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy squad under review

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had seemingly told the selectors it was up to them to decide whether they wished to make changes to the team. It was reported a couple of days ago; now it’s been confirmed by Naqvi himself. He says that the selectors are ‘reviewing’ the team as the ICC deadline comes closer and closer.

“The selectors have the right to review any squad they announce. Khushdil Shah and Faheem Ashraf have been included in the squad with the right intentions. They are now reviewing the squad because they have time until February 12 to make changes if they want,” he told PTI when being asked about PCB making changes to the squad.

What made PCB ‘forced’ to rethink the team?

Some ex-cricketers, including former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif, weren’t pleased. The wicketkeeper had labelled all-rounder Faheem Ashraf making it to the squad as a ‘political pick.’ Legendary Wasim Akram wasn’t too pleased with Faheem’s inclusion either and listed his horrible record when asked.

Khushdil Shah’s selection didn’t go well either. The southpaw probably came in for Saim, but he hasn’t played an ODI for Pakistan since 2022. Ahmad Shahzad aimed at the PCB, accusing them of fitting certain players into the team at the behest of others.
