OTD in 2009 | Virender Sehwag nearly became first batter to score three triple-centuries

Virender Sehwag is one of the greatest Test cricketer India has ever produced.

Virender Sehwag has a legacy in Test cricket. He is the only Indian batter who has scored two triple centuries. On 4 December 2023, Sehwag was very close to accomplishing a milestone that would have created a new pinnacle in Test cricket.

Sehwag was at the top of his game ten years ago when he scored 293 runs at the Brabourne Stadium against Sri Lanka. The former Indian batter was in such a magical touch that he struck Murali for 84 off just 76 balls.

Virender Sehwag had hit 40 fours and seven sixes in that Test cricket. The opener also became the third fastest Indian to 6000 Test runs in that time.

Virender Sehwag stepped in to create history on third day

After ending the day with, Sehwag was not out at 284. On the third day, he was ready to create history by breaking many records. Even Brain Lara’s highest 400 runs seemed unsafe that day. However, Sehwag missed the triple hundred by just 7 runs as he was Muralidaran at 293 runs.

In the match, Sri Lanka put 393 runs on the scoreboard in the first innings. India responded with a huge total of 726/9d with Sehwag’s 293 and MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 100 runs.

India won the game by an innings and 24 runs after bundling out the Sri Lankan team 309 runs.
