Will Dhoni retire or continue to play next season is anybody’s guess. The Chennai talisman has both hinted at his farewell and quashed his retirement rumours during the IPL 2023 season. Now, heading into their final game at Chepauk this season, the question of MS Dhoni’s future continues to dominate headlines. CSK are chasing a record equalling 5th IPL title, and a win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday gives them a ticket to the final.

This season was expected to be MS Dhoni’s final swansong. Everywhere Chennai have played, crowds have turned up in numbers cheering for the men in yellow. It has all the markings of a farewell tour, but whether or not Thala makes that call remains to be seen. Such is the secrecy that not even the CSK management are aware of the 41-year-old’s next move.

“We believe MS Dhoni is going to play next season as well, so I hope fans will continue to support us like every time,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was quoted by TimesNow.

InsideSport earlier reported that IPL 2023 will not be his last. Instead, MS Dhoni will continue for one more season before choosing his successor. Ben Stokes was tipped to be the new CSK captain. But his injury and national team commitments have not helped things. Ravindra Jadeja is unlikely to get another shot at the job, while Ruturaj Gaikwad remains an option.

Given CSK’s lack of options, Dhoni could continue should his fitness permit. The former India captain has struggled with a knee injury, hurting his ability to run between the wickets. After matches, the CSK captain has worn ice packs and gquicken his recovery. Should he remain fit, the 41-year-old could very well continue until 2025, when the mega auctions return.
