There are already plans in place to make Shubman Gill the skipper for all three formats. While the ploy might sound decent in the two formats he has performed consistently in — Tests and ODIs, but to see him lead the T20Is could be a bit too much. That remains a format, where he is yet to set the stage on fire.
Shubman Gill failing to turn up in T20Is?
On Wednesday, he had the opportunity to silence his critics in the 2nd T20I between India and South Africa at home ground in Mullanpur, but all he could manage was a golden duck, a wicket where the Proteas went on to score a massive 213. There was no time to even judge if he struggled, or looked comfortable at the crease.
And it is just not one innings, where one is judging him, but his numbers haven’t been the best since 2024. For starters, in this series he has been dismissed to Ngidi twice now, and his figures vs the bowler read – 3 balls, 2 dismissals, and four runs. If you thought that was miserable, it gets better.
The last time Shubman Gill scored a fifty in T20Is is, way back in July 2024 — 58 vs Zimbabwe. His only ton in the format came back in Feb 2023 vs New Zealand. If one looks at his last 10 innings, he has crossed 40 only once – let alone a fifty. And his struggles have come mostly after getting starts.
Suryakumar Yadav’s failures concerning
One must also speak about Suryakumar Yadav here, who is going through poor form here. While in 2024 he averaged only 26 with four fifties to his name, in 2025 in 19 innings he averages 14 and has no fifty to his name. Despite an exceptional IPL 2025, Surya has been very ordinary with his batting; his highest score has been only 47 this year.
| Versus | Runs |
|---|---|
| 5 | South Africa |
| 12 | South Africa |
| DNB | Australia |
| 20 | Australia |
| 24 | Australia |
| 1 | Australia |
| 39 | Australia |
| 1 | Pakistan |
| 12 | Sri Lanka |
| 5 | Bangladesh |
In the SA match too, he was removed for 5 by Jansen, where he fiddled with a delivery outside off, and was caught by the keeper. It just appears, he is low on confidence, and bowlers know his weaknesses, which did not exist before this year.
That only makes one wonder, if they really deserve a place in the T20Is? Yes, one is the skipper, and the other, VC, but then their performance is just not up to the mark. And if things continue like this, it might cost India big in the T20 World Cup.
