‘ODI bully’ Shubman Gill makes life difficult with poor show in SA vs IND 1st Test

Having failed twice in SA vs IND 1st Test and throughout 2023 in Test, Shubman Gill is under pressure to replicate ODI form in whites.

With scores of 2 & 26 — Shubman Gill is making his life difficult in Test cricket even though it’s his early days of his career. After scoring 2, Shubman Gill fell for 26 in SA vs IND 1st Test. That he has averaged only 28.66 in 10 Test innings in 2023 is in stark contrast with his ODI numbers. In the fifty-over format, he has 1584 runs at 63.36 average. But with India vs England Test series coming up next, Shubman has just two innings to make a course correction with Ruturaj Gaikwad waiting in the wings.

Shubman Gill has ended 2023 with 2134 runs but a closer look at his numbers in whites will disappoint you. Despite scoring a Test century against Australia, he has only managed 238 runs. That’s 138 runs in nine innings combined.

To make things worse, Shubman Gill has scores of 6, 10, 29, 2 & 26 away from home in Tests in 2023. And that does not help his cause.

Shubman Gill under pressure

However, with five-match IND vs ENG Test series coming up, Shubman Gill is under pressure. He now exactly has two innings to save his place in the Test side before selectors take any rash call.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been in the scheme of things in Test while the door is still not closed on Cheteshwar Pujara.

And if Shubman fails two more times in South Africa, selector could look at other options including Ruturaj Gaikwad who is currently recovering from an injury. And recalling Cheteshwar Pujara can’t be ruled out either.
