‘Not doing justice if…’ Jasprit Bumrah opens up about playing for India

India's captain Bumrah highlighted the pressure of expectations on players, praised emerging talents for avoiding it, and noted their unhindered potential.

India captain Jasprit Bumrah underlined how the weight of expectations can overwhelm players, leading to unwelcome pressure. He expressed his satisfaction with the emerging talents in the national squad, noting their ability to sidestep this burden. This, he believes, allows them to unlock their complete potential without any hindrances holding them back.

“If you play with a baggage of expectation, you are under pressure. You have to keep those expectations aside. You are not doing yourself 100 percent justice if you are playing with so many expectations,” Bumrah said after India defeated Ireland by 33 runs on Sunday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series.

“It is tough to pick an XI. It’s a great headache to have. Everyone is eager. Everyone is confident. All of us wanted to play for India. Eventually, everyone has to work their way up. If you play with a baggage of expectation, you are under pressure. You have to keep those expectations aside. You are not doing yourself 100 percent justice if you are playing with so many expectations,” Bumrah added.
