No ugly tobacco ads in IPL 2025? BCCI Apex Council Meeting to take call

A Delhi Premier League match taking place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which is Delhi Capitals’ home base in the IPL.
The state association makes deals for sponsorship in the stadiums, and therefore, directly, the BCCI doesn't decide which ads to place.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for an Apex Council meeting. On the same day as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 opener between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad, March 22, BCCI will discuss a few matters in Kolkata.

BCCI Apex Council to take call on tobacco ads in IPL 2025

One of the main topics will be to decide whether to ban all forms of tobacco and alcohol promotions, including surrogate advertisements. Just last week, the Director General of Health Services, Atul Goel, wrote to IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal regarding the matter last week. This includes advertisements in IPL 2025 matches, events, and even national TV broadcasts.

“Discussion regarding sponsorship from tobacco and crypto brands,” read item No. 9 on the BCCI Apex Council Meeting agenda.

For the unaware, BCCI doesn’t directly decide which advertisements will be displayed during a match. The sponsorship deals are dependent upon the state cricket associations organising the match. However, if BCCI wishes to make amends following the government’s directive, they can advise the associations to change their ways.

What else is on the agenda?

The BCCI will also talk about the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. “Discussion on formation of LOC for Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 and discussion regarding venues for Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025” will take place as well. For those uninformed, the BCCI last hosted a Women’s ODI World Cup in 2023.

The schedule of 2025-26 will also be discussed. On the men’s side, India are slated to host West Indies and South Africa, but the venues for these Test series’ haven’t been decided yet. Bangladesh will play a white-ball series against India in August.
