Contrary to the report in PTI on Thursday, a new one in Indian Today suggests that Rohit Sharma is likely to opt out of the upcoming India vs England series in June. PTI had claimed, that despite twin failures in Australia and at home vs New Zealand, Rohit would continue as the captain of the team, but that might just not happen.
No Rohit Sharma for India vs England Tests, Virat Kohli In
The report further suggests that even though Rohit will not be in the team, Virat Kohli the batter will certainly be in the team, despite a lackluster performance vs Australia, except Perth Test, where he scored a ton. He had scored 190 runs in five Tests, at an average of 24.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma had a pathetic run of form, where he scored 31 runs in 3 matches, a run short of the 32 wickets Jasprit Bumrah had taken. In fact, such was his form that he had to opt to sit out of the last Test in Sydney. While many had speculated retirement from the batter then, but he had clarified, “This is not a decision of retirement.
Had Dropped Himself in Sydney Test
“I am not moving away from this game. But I took a decision to step away from this game because I was not able to score runs with the bat. There is no guarantee that I will score runs 2 months or 5 months from now,” Rohit had told Star Sports.
“I have seen a lot of cricket, every minute, every second and everyday life changes. I believe that things will change, but at the same time, I have to be realistic as well. People sitting in the commentary box, or writing with a laptop in their hands, will not decide how my life goes,” Rohit added.
Decision During IPL 2025 Playoffs?
Meanwhile, India’s tour to England will start on June 20 in Headingley. One of the biggest issues for the team will be as to who will lead if Rohit won’t play. Added trouble will be, if Jasprit Bumrah is unfit, then maybe Shubman Gill or Rishabh Pant will have to be given reigns of the team.
It seems that the BCCI might take a decision during the IPL 2025 playoffs only.
