Everyone seems certain that Rohit Sharma will retire after the India vs Australia Test series given how things are going for the Indian captain. A few days ago, reports had come out suggesting that another big name, after Ravichandran Ashwin, would hang up their boots after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ends. Many experts and former cricketers believe Rohit will step away from the longest form of the game if he doesn’t do much as a batter in the remaining outings in Australia.
Retirement round the corner for Rohit Sharma?
Sunil Gavaskar echoes the same. The former Indian captain told Sports Tak, “The next three innings will decide Rohit Sharma’s Test future.” 2024 hasn’t been kind to Rohit, especially in the second half. In his last 14 innings, he scored just 155 runs at 11.07 and has got just one fifty. He’s also lost four of his last five matches as captain, which includes the humiliating whitewash (0-3) at home against New Zealand.

Gavaskar criticised the fellow Mumbaikar for his decision to drop Shubman Gill for Washington Sundar. Not only does it weaken the batting line-up, but it also takes a hit on Gill’s confidence, who looked in fine touch in Brisbane. It’s also not like Gill was doing worse than the two senior pros, Rohit himself and Virat Kohli. Gavaskar also questioned the demotion of KL Rahul, who has been India’s best batter on the Australia tour.
“I wasn’t in favour of Team India’s decision to drop Shubman Gill and pick Washington Sundar for the fourth Test; it’s beyond my comprehension. We all know it’s India’s batting which is suffering the most in the series. And why did you demote your most consistent batter, KL Rahul? Rohit should have come at number 3 himself. These questions will certainly be raised,” Gavaskar added.
