The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 Playoffs are set. For the third consecutive year, the Delhi Capitals (DC) Women have reached the final, and the Mumbai Indians (MI) Women have finished third.
And like the last two seasons, a different team has qualified for the Eliminator. It was UP Warriorz in 2023, Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024, and now it’s Gujarat Giants (GG) Women. The question is, will we have a repeat of the WPL 2023 Final where DC took on MI, or will GG make the bid for ultimate glory?
3rd time lucky for Delhi Capitals?
The Capitals have been the best team since the WPL started in 2023. They have topped the points table each time. However, the Meg Lanning-led side has failed every time when it matters the most, i.e., the final.
Looking at the match-ups, this season they have beaten MI both times. The first match was a nail-biter. A last-ball thriller. But the second meeting was a walk in the park. Meanwhile, GG beat DC in the last group stage match they played. But DC’s form has been exceptional. They have won three of their last four matches. Lanning and co. would like to get over the final hump this time around.
2-0: Mumbai Indians’ desire
MI also lost their last group stage. Had they won, it would have been them to qualify for the WPL 2025 Final. Harmanpreet Kaur and co. would be heading into the Eliminator with confidence. Simple because they have wood over GG. MI has also been on two good runs. Once winning three consecutive matches.
They are 1-0 in the WPL Finals and would like to maintain that undefeated streak. Doing that won’t be easy, but MI has that in them.
Gujarat Giants’ late surge & aim to glory
The chances of Ashleigh Gardner’s women making it to the top three looked tough at the start. After losing three of their first four matches, GG looked out. But they have some recovery. Similar to DC, GG have also won three of their last four matches.
They are red-hot; now they need to be calm and composed against MI in the WPL 2025 Eliminator to set up a showdown with DC on March 15. But that won’t be all. To stand on that podium, they’ll need to be flawless against the two best teams in WPL history.
