MS Dhoni’s participation in IPL 2025 not dependent on retention policy, confirms CSK

Dhoni has been part of CSK since the IPL's inception in 2008 and is one of the biggest factors behind the franchise and the tournament reaching new heights.

MS Dhoni’s IPL 2025 future doesn’t depend on any policy. The number of retentions or mega auction won’t play a role in ‘Thala’ continuing to represent the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Earlier, it was reported that CSK and Dhoni will decide about their future when the BCCI reveals the retention policy for the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, that stance has changed.

According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni will play the 18th season of the IPL even if each franchise is allowed to retain just two players. But CSK’s decision is dependent on Dhoni. If he wishes to continue, he’ll be retained.

During the IPL owners and BCCI office-bearers meeting, we’d heard that CSK wanted to revive an old rule by which Dhoni would be considered an uncapped player. However, it was met with some pushback from other franchises.

Knowing what Dhoni brings to the table and how having him benefits the league, the BCCI wasn’t ready to rule it out. “There is a bright possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed at length during the meeting last month and could well be brought back when the player regulations are announced,” a BCCI source told News18 last month.

Then CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told the Times of India that the franchise hadn’t requested anything. Instead, it was the BCCI that wanted to keep the rule. “I have no idea about it—we have not requested it—BCCI have themselves told us that the ‘uncapped player rule’ may be kept, that’s all—they haven’t announced anything yet,” Viswanathan had said in August.
